Why Wrestling

Wrestling is the sport that makes every other sport easier. It builds balance, body control, strength and the kind of confidence that comes from knowing you can handle yourself. There is nowhere to hide on a mat, and kids learn quickly that effort is the one thing they fully control.

What kids get out of it

  • Confidence. Every wrestler wins some and loses some, in front of people, and learns to walk back to the bench either way.
  • Discipline. Practices are structured, technique takes repetition, and improvement is visible week to week.
  • Fitness. Few sports work the whole body harder in a shorter session.
  • Carryover. Football, lacrosse, hockey and jiu-jitsu coaches all notice the kids who wrestled.

They wrestled too

Some of the best-known names in football spent their winters on a wrestling mat first. Ray Lewis was a Florida state champion wrestler in high school before his Hall of Fame career with the Ravens. Sean McDermott, head coach of the Buffalo Bills, was a national prep wrestling champion. Saquon Barkley wrestled as a kid before football took over. Ask any of them and they will tell you the mat is where the toughness came from.

No experience required

Most of our wrestlers had never set foot on a mat before their first practice. Coaches start with stance, motion and how to fall safely, and nobody competes until they are ready. Scrimmages and tournaments are always optional.
